The Gap Standard Cover Leaves Open
Standard home and contents policies cover events like fire, storm, theft and impact โ but everyday accidents (a dropped TV, red wine on the carpet, a child's bike scratching the car in the garage) are usually excluded unless you've added accidental damage cover, either as a built-in feature or a paid extra.
What It Typically Covers
Accidental damage cover extends to unintentional harm caused by you, your family or (sometimes) pets and visitors โ things a standard policy specifically excludes because they aren't caused by an insured 'event' like a storm or break-in. It commonly covers building and contents separately, so check whether you need it on one, both, or it's bundled automatically.
Is It Worth Adding?
It usually adds a modest amount to your premium and is most worth it in households with young children, pets, or expensive fixtures and furniture where an accident is a genuine 'when', not an 'if'. For a minimalist household with few valuables, it's a smaller-value add-on.
What's Usually Still Excluded
- Wear and tear, or gradual deterioration
- Damage caused deliberately or through gross negligence
- Damage occurring during a professional renovation (usually covered by the tradesperson's own insurance instead)
