Why So Many Australians Have Cover They Didn't Actively Choose
Most super funds automatically provide a base level of life and TPD cover to new members (often without extras like trauma or comprehensive income protection), funded by deductions from your super balance rather than your take-home pay โ which is exactly why it's convenient, and exactly why it's easy to end up underinsured without realising it.
The Genuine Advantages
Premiums are paid from your super balance rather than your bank account, which can ease cash flow, and cover is often provided with minimal or no health underwriting if you join within a set window, which is genuinely valuable for anyone who'd struggle to get cover approved outside super due to health history.
The Trade-Offs
Default cover through super is often a fairly low, one-size-fits-all sum insured that doesn't reflect your actual debts, dependants or income. TPD held through super is typically restricted to 'any occupation' definitions rather than 'own occupation'. And because premiums are drawn from your super balance, they quietly erode your retirement savings over time โ a cost that's easy not to notice compared to a bill you actually see.
Income Protection Through Super โ An Extra Wrinkle
Income protection held through super is often capped at a shorter benefit period than a standalone policy, and payouts are typically paid to the super fund first before being released to you, which can add delay at claim time compared to a standalone policy that pays you directly.
A Sensible Way to Think About It
Super-held cover is a reasonable baseline, particularly for anyone who might struggle with underwriting outside it โ but it's worth checking the actual sum insured against what you'd calculate you need (see our guide on that), and considering topping up or holding some cover โ particularly own-occupation TPD or trauma โ outside super where the default doesn't fit.
