Why Joining Age Matters So Much
Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading is a financial incentive for Australians to take out private hospital cover earlier in life and keep it. If you don't hold hospital cover by 1 July following your 31st birthday, you'll pay a loading on top of your premium once you do join โ and that loading is permanent for a decade.
How the Loading Is Calculated
The loading increases by 2% for every year you're aged over 30 when you join, based on your age on 1 July prior to joining. Someone joining at 35 pays a 10% loading (5 years ร 2%); someone joining at 40 pays 20%. The maximum loading anyone can be charged is 70%.
How Long It Lasts
The loading applies for 10 years of continuous hospital cover, after which it drops to 0% permanently, provided you maintain your cover without a break longer than permitted.
The Grace Period
You're allowed lifetime breaks of up to 1,094 days (roughly 3 years) without hospital cover without it affecting your LHC loading calculation โ useful for a career break or travel โ though this doesn't exempt you from waiting periods if you later re-join with a new insurer.
The Exception
Anyone born on or before 1 July 1934 is completely exempt from LHC loading, regardless of when they join.
The Bottom Line
If you're in your late 20s and even mildly considering hospital cover eventually, joining before your LHC base day (1 July after turning 31) locks in the lowest possible lifetime premium โ waiting even a few years afterward adds a permanent loading that follows you for a decade every time you hold cover.
