What Matters Most Before 31
The single biggest financial decision for anyone under 31 isn't which insurer to pick โ it's whether to hold any hospital cover at all before your Lifetime Health Cover base day (1 July after turning 31), since that decision has a permanent effect on your premiums for a decade once you do join.
Dependants on a Family Policy
Most insurers let you stay on a parent's family policy as a dependant until 21 (or up to 25 if you're a full-time student), which is often the cheapest way to hold hospital cover through university without the cost of a standalone policy.
Student and Basic Options
Once you're no longer eligible as a dependant, a Basic hospital tier paired with a modest extras policy is usually enough to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge (if your income is high enough to matter) and to lock in your LHC base day โ you can always upgrade the tier later without restarting your LHC clock.
International Students
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a separate, compulsory product for most student visa holders and is not the same as standard Australian health insurance โ check your visa conditions before assuming a standard policy satisfies your visa requirement.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
If you're 28โ30 and even slightly unsure whether you'll want cover eventually, taking out a Basic hospital policy now is usually far cheaper over a lifetime than the LHC loading you'd otherwise pay for joining later.
