What Beneficiaries Actually Need to Do
A life insurance claim is generally lodged by the policy owner, a beneficiary, or the executor of the estate, and the practical steps are more procedural than most people expect.
The Typical Process
- Contact the insurer directly (or via the financial adviser who arranged the policy, if any) to request a claim form
- Provide the death certificate, and for TPD or trauma claims, detailed medical evidence and reports from treating doctors
- The insurer assesses the claim against the policy's specific definitions โ this is where 'own occupation' vs 'any occupation', or a condition's specific severity threshold, becomes directly relevant
- Once approved, payment is typically made to the nominated beneficiary (for life cover) or the policy owner (for TPD, trauma and income protection)
How Long It Takes
Straightforward death claims with clear documentation are often settled within a few weeks to a couple of months. TPD and trauma claims can take longer, particularly where the diagnosis or disability assessment requires detailed specialist reports or independent medical review.
Why Some Claims Are Disputed
The most common reasons a claim is delayed or disputed aren't fraud โ they're incomplete documentation, a definition genuinely not met (like 'any occupation' TPD when the claimant can still do some form of work), or a pre-existing condition that wasn't disclosed at application. This is exactly why the earlier guides on disclosure and definitions matter well before you ever need to claim.
Getting Help
A financial adviser (if one arranged the policy) can often assist with the claims process directly, and some insurers offer dedicated claims support staff โ it's worth asking what support is available rather than assuming you need to navigate paperwork alone during an already difficult time.
