Why 'It's Just Australia' Isn't the Full Picture
Medicare covers medical treatment for eligible residents anywhere within Australia, which is exactly why many people assume domestic travel insurance is pointless β but the medical piece is only one part of what a policy actually protects.
What Domestic Cover Is Really For
Domestic travel insurance mainly protects your cancellation costs (non-refundable flights, accommodation, tours), your luggage, and rental car excess β none of which Medicare touches. If a cyclone cancels your Cairns trip, or your bag goes missing on a domestic flight, Medicare offers zero help; a domestic policy does.
The Distance Rule Worth Checking
Many domestic policies only apply if you're travelling at least 250km from home β a detail that catches out people insuring a short regional trip assuming any distance qualifies. Always check the specific distance threshold before assuming you're covered.
International Cover Is a Different Job Entirely
International policies need to do everything domestic cover does, plus provide genuine overseas medical cover β which is why international premiums are meaningfully higher and why checking the medical limit (ideally unlimited) matters far more for international trips than domestic ones.
The Multi-Destination Trip
If a single trip includes both domestic and international legs (say, Sydney to Bali via a Melbourne stopover with a few days there), a standard international policy typically covers the whole trip, including the domestic legs β worth confirming directly rather than assuming you need two separate policies.
