Routine care add-ons are priced by insurers to be, on average, close to cost-neutral or mildly in the insurer's favour — the same dynamic as any budgeted, predictable expense wrapped into an insurance product. If you total up a typical year of vaccinations, flea treatment and a check-up, it often comes close to what the add-on costs in premium.
The value isn't in beating the insurer financially — it's in converting a handful of larger, easy-to-forget annual bills into a smaller, predictable monthly amount, and in some cases bundling a small discount on top.
Who It Suits
Owners who value predictable budgeting and are likely to forget or delay routine vet visits without a financial nudge tend to get the most practical value from routine care cover. Owners who reliably budget for and pay routine costs directly, and would rather keep premiums lower, are often better off skipping the add-on and self-funding routine care.
